Materials Engineering Case Study

Project Overview

Materials engineering is a growing field that is essential to a surprising range of industries, including sword-making, chocolate crystallization, artificial tissue engineering, and aviation forensics. High calibre engineers are needed to meet the needs of this quickly developing discipline and sector. But first, Engineering students need to become aware of this career path.

WHAT WE DID

  • Creative development
  • Script development
  • Film production
  • Motion graphics
  • Illustrations
  • Virtual tour production

Meeting a pressing need

UBC Studios collaborated with faculty from Materials Engineering to produce a series of industry case study videos, which introduce the range of applications of materials engineering in the real world. Industry experts were interviewed about the centrality of materials engineering in fields including aviation forensics, chocolate making, steel fabrication, sustainable cement production, and polymer engineering.

The videos combine compelling footage from the field and engaging animations with insightful perspective from experts to create case studies that illuminate the depth and reach of materials engineering. The videos are included in curriculum materials for students enrolled in UBC Engineering courses.

I especially love hearing our interviewees reflections on what motivates them in their work as an engineer, and how their work can impact society. These videos have helped to bring many concepts that I discuss in lectures to life!

Gabrielle Lam, Assistant Professor of Teaching, Department of Materials Engineering and School of Biomedical Engineering

The Outcome

The Materials Engineering Case Study Videos will reach thousands of UBC students in coming years, offering an exciting opportunity and essential role as they forge their career path as engineers. The team at UBC Studios takes pride in bringing a high level of production quality and creativity to such an important and far-reaching project.
