Social Exposome Cluster

The Challenge

Research clusters are interdisciplinary networks of researchers working together to solve challenges that transcend traditional boundaries associated with any one department. The Social Exposome Cluster spans eight faculties including Medicine, Arts, Science, Education, Applied Science, Land and Food Systems, Dentistry, and the Sauder School of Business. This campaign of video and animation assets sought to simplify the complexity of their work to be both more approachable and easier to understand for the public, and especially parents. The cluster investigates the cascading effects of extrinsic factors, such as income poverty and social relationships, that manifest into intrinsic responses inside the body to impact health across the life-course.

WHAT WE DID

  • Animations
  • Non-scripted creative video
  • Interview-based videos
  • Scripted voiceover video

Addressing audiences

Given the variety of audiences, communication needs, and a wide range of topics to cover, we worked with the Social Exposome Research Cluster to establish a series of assets to could support them. High-level messaging about the cluster for the public and other researchers was provided through key interviews, while more public-facing information was simplified through animation to help illustrate complex ideas in a relatable way. To appeal to parents, we worked with parents and children in a fun and non-scripted approach asking kids “what do you think makes you healthy”. In the end, eight distinct assets were created for their communication needs, addressing a range of key topics, information, and audiences.

The UBC Social Exposome Cluster aims to understand how early-life social factors and exposures become biologically embedded, and influence future health outcomes. Through the videos created by UBC Studios, we are able to share with the general public the current and ongoing research being conducted, in accessible terms and media formats.
